60+ terms parents are most likely to encounter in gaming chats, Discord servers, and Roblox DMs. The high-severity ones are tagged. Skim the threat section even if you skip the rest.

Threats & warning signs

  • sextortionHigh risk

    When someone obtains a nude image and uses it to extort more images, money, or behavior. The fastest-growing online crime against teens.

  • condoHigh risk

    Roblox slang for an adult/sexual experience hidden under innocent names. Roblox bans them; new ones appear daily.

  • groomingHigh risk

    A patterned escalation from friendly contact to inappropriate request, used by predators to build trust before exploitation.

  • beamingHigh risk

    Stealing a Roblox account or items via social engineering or malicious links. Beamed accounts get resold.

  • doxxingHigh risk

    Revealing or threatening to reveal someone's real-world information online (address, school, full name).

  • catfishHigh risk

    Someone using a fake identity online. In sextortion, predators pose as same-age peers.

  • swattingHigh risk

    Calling in a fake emergency to get police to raid someone's home. Has gotten kids hurt.

  • “add me on Snap”High risk

    The single most common grooming pivot. Move chat off Roblox/Discord to disappearing Snapchat messages.

  • “jump in my Discord”High risk

    Similar pivot, but to Discord — less moderated, voice + DMs available.

  • “u single?”High risk

    Almost always a sextortion opener from a stranger. Especially on Discord.

  • “trade nudes”High risk

    Direct sextortion script. Predator typically sends a stolen image first.

  • “our parents wouldn't understand”High risk

    Isolation flattery. Stage 3 of grooming. Big red flag.

General slang

  • sus

    Suspicious. Made famous by Among Us; now used everywhere.

  • no cap

    “No lie.” Used to emphasize sincerity. The opposite is “cap.”

  • based

    Unapologetic, independent-minded. Generally a compliment.

  • bussin

    Really good (originally about food).

  • lit

    Exciting, awesome.

  • mid

    Mediocre. Sometimes harsher than “OK.”

  • rizz

    Charisma, charm — especially romantic charm.

  • ratio

    When a reply gets more attention than the original post — a put-down on social media.

  • cope

    Telling someone to deal with reality. Sometimes mean.

  • salty

    Upset, bitter (usually about losing).

  • touch grass

    “Go outside.” Telling someone to log off and live in the real world.

  • vibe / vibes

    General mood or feeling. “Vibes are off” = something feels wrong.

  • sweat / sweaty

    A player trying way too hard. Often used about Fortnite.

  • tryhard

    Same as sweat. Pejorative.

  • noob

    Newbie, unskilled. Long-running insult in gaming.

  • bot

    A bad player. Or literally an automated player.

  • smurf

    A skilled player on a new account, dominating lower-skilled lobbies.

  • camping

    Staying still in one spot in a shooter to ambush.

  • trickshot

    An impressive, often unlikely shot. Big in Fortnite/COD culture.

  • grinding

    Repeatedly playing to level up or earn items.

  • loot boxWatch

    A randomized in-game reward purchase. Linked to gambling psychology.

  • battle pass

    A seasonal upgrade you buy for extra unlocks. Standard in Fortnite, Apex, etc.

  • skin

    A cosmetic outfit for a character. Bought with V-Bucks/Robux/etc.

  • RP / roleplayWatch

    Pretending to be a character in-game. Innocent most of the time; predators use it as cover.

  • opp / opps

    Opposition, enemies. From hip-hop, now general slang.

  • simp

    Someone overly attentive to a person they like. Used as mockery.

  • cringe

    Embarrassing.

  • based

    Unapologetic. (Repeated for completeness)

  • yeet

    To throw, or an exclamation. Mostly leaving usage.

  • POG / poggers

    Awesome, exciting. From Twitch culture.

Abbreviations

  • kysHigh risk

    “Kill yourself.” Used as an insult in gaming. Common, casual, and harmful.

  • fr / fr fr

    “For real” / “for real for real” — emphasizing truth.

  • GOAT

    Greatest of all time. High praise.

  • L / W

    Loss / Win. “Took the L.” Used about anything.

  • OG

    Original / Original Gangster. A player or skin that's been around since the start.

  • DM / PMWatch

    Direct/private message. Where most grooming and sextortion happen.

  • F

    “Pay respects.” Used after something bad happens.

  • IRL

    In real life. As opposed to online.

  • IDK / IDC / TBH / NGL

    “I don't know / I don't care / To be honest / Not gonna lie.”

  • AFK

    Away from keyboard.

In-game currencies

  • Robux

    Roblox's currency. $9.99 = 800 Robux. Kids spend a lot.

  • V-Bucks

    Fortnite's currency. $7.99 = 1,000 V-Bucks. Battle pass = 950.

  • Minecoins

    Minecraft Bedrock's currency for the Marketplace.

  • Apex Coins

    Apex Legends' currency.

  • VP

    Valorant Points — the in-game currency.

Platform terms

  • altWatch

    An alternate account. Often used to evade bans or stalk people.

  • server

    A group/community on Discord or a multiplayer game world.

  • RealmWatch

    Minecraft's private hosted server. Owner controls everything in it.

  • voice chat / VCWatch

    Live audio chat. Most platforms now have it.
